Unveiled in Nature

An award-winning photojournalist based on Vancouver Island, I enjoy using my trusty Nikon gear plus 300mm Tamron lens, curiosity and creative bent to explore other photo avenues. Drawing on the beauty of the island and its vast scenic hinterland — with stops often in Nanaimo — I like to put my muses in environments which are both visually pleasing and often challenge the subject as well as the photographer. Some of the best shots are often what I call the "out-takes." Always expect a good workout as we walk, or climb, to get that shot. Besides my interest in editorial photography, I'm also piqued by shooting glamour, fine art portraiture as well as artistic nude. I like to think of my work as being active, not inactive. It's always an adventure, too, as my muse might find herself up in a tree, wallowing in some mud or sand, or draped over a rock while water rushes by. I enjoy playing with depth of field, not just following the old adage, "500, F11 and go home." I'll push the envelope and push my P3200 or Tri-X 400 ASA film to 6400 and let the film enhance the B&W experience. Grainy yes, but this adds to the artistic photo conclusion, and sometimes working in B&W adds to the experience, rather than just always focused in colour. Moreover, I'm not your conventional studio photographer because I've honed skills as photojournalist and adapt to what elements are dealt the shooter. Like being at a crime scene or serious MVC, I'll have to improvise sometimes to get that shot. I take that same philosophy when it comes to working with a muse by the shoreline of the ocean or high in the mountains surrounded by 1,000-year-old trees. I enjoy having individuals interested in the creative process to enhance the visual experience, but at the same time also share the process as we learn from those who inspire each others photographic curiosity. Have a sense of adventure? Sense of humour? Are you ready to be in focus during an outdoor shoot full of fun and frivolity? Not afraid of hiking or getting wet — whether it's fresh lake water or salty ocean H2O — or muddy? If so, I'm up for the challenge if you are photographically speaking. Say cheese! Just because there are nude or implied images displayed in my portfolio, does not mean this photographer is looking for or asking for his muses to shoot that style. I will also produce great images within the realm of what you are looking for and your comfort level. We collaborate in the creative process.
